This outstanding antique Parian ware ewer was purchased from the estate of a Nashville glass collector. I say that it is an English piece, ca. 1895-1905, because that is the way it was specifically represented to me.
13 7/8" tall, 16 1/2" circumference.
Made of unglazed white bisque porcelain, the piece is in remarkable condition for the complexity of the detail and the age of it. I can find one chip on a leaf, but with so much going on in the work, it is inconsequential.
I assume this is an ornamental piece versus a functional piece since the interior is unglazed, as well. Complex three dimensional grape clusters, tendrils, and leaves are in contrast to the ribbed body with alternating panels of white and a rare pink. The usual contrasting background color was blue. The ewer stands on a handsome ribbed pedestal. Twisted grapevines form the handle.
I have a companion piece to this one. It will be listed separately. To have a pair available is a remarkable thing.
Parian ware originated in the late 1800s in Staffordshire, England. Copeland, Wedgwood, and Minton were English factories that all produced the product using various terms for it---Copeland, "statuary porcelain"; Wedgwood, "Carrara"; and Minton, "Parian" for the Greek Isle, Paros, that produced a lot of the stone used for statuary.
It was also produced in America by the Fenton's Works; Bennington, Vermont, which later became the United States Pottery Company.
I saw this identical Parian ware as a 3 piece set of 2 ewers and bowl priced for $2495 in an antique mall in Houston, TX, when there for the NCAA basketball Sweet 16/Elite 8 tournament.
