What an exquisite antique painted porcelain plate in an outstanding antique frame! One of the photos shows the back removed and the plate's hallmark "Jos. Steidl--ZNAIM". Internet research discovered an Austrian Jos. Steidl who was born June 1, 1819 and died March 19, 1901. Znaim (Znojmo) is a town in S. Czech Republic, in Moravia, on the Austrian border. Its population is mostly German. One of the city's industries is to produce ceramics.
The porcelain plate is about 8" in diameter.
The frame is 11 1/2" square and is a real treasure. The shape of it is lovely, and it is faced with ruby velvet that has worn down over the years to a wonderful "patina" to show its age.
